The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien

The Hobbit was first published in 1937 and has been in print ever since. The story is set many years before the more famous "Load of The Rings".

tells of a great quest by Bilbo Baggins a Hobbit of the Shire, Gandalf the Grey a Wizard, and thirteen dwarves to find the treasure taken by the dragon Smaug, the dwarf-hoards of the Kings under the Mountain, beneath Erebor in Dale, far off in the East.

During an attack by Orcs in a high pass of the Misty Mountains, Bilbo became separated from the dwarfs and Gandalf for a while in the black orc-mines deep under the mountains, and there, as he groped in vain in the dark, he finds a Ring of Power that belonged to creature called Gollum.

Bilbo escapes from Gollum and the mountain and rejoins the dwarves and Gandalf. He uses the Ring to help the quest first by saving the dwarves on two occasions and later in their encounter with Smaug.
